Before moving to London and being called to the Bar in England and Wales, Saul lectured in private and commercial law at the University of Edinburgh, during which time he obtained his PhD in contract and restitution law, and established a highly successful commercial litigation practice at the Cape Town Bar, where he practised for almost 10 years.
Saul was extensively briefed in a broad range of high value commercial litigation matters in the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, arbitrations and in international arbitrations under the ICC rules. Saul was briefed both on his own and as junior counsel to leading silks both at the Cape Town and Johannesburg Bars (where he latterly also held chambers). Saul was highly regarded and became one of the leading juniors at the Cape Town Bar.
Saul’s work included all interlocutory applications (including summary judgment applications), trial work, arbitrations and appeals.
Two of his recent cases included a complex $450 million damages claim arising out of a contractual dispute relating to the Nigerian mobile phone industry and a $50 million damages claim arising out of contractual dispute relating to the platinum mining industry in Zimbabwe.
Saul has been described by solicitors in South Africa as having an incisive legal mind, excellent tactical nous, a commanding presence in court, commercial common sense and as being very approachable and user friendly.
Saul has quickly established a busy practice in London, which has included being instructed in a substantial contractual dispute relating to hedge funds and obtaining a freezing injunction arising out of a commercial fraud. Saul undertakes work in banking and finance, commercial dispute resolution, commercial fraud, property damage, insurance and re-insurance and professional negligence.
