Insights
2TG’s women silks were among those celebrating 75 years since women first became KCs at an event held in the Royal Courts of Justice on 3rd October 2024. Over 350 female KCs and Judges came together to mark the milestone, which was hosted by three High Court judges, McGowan, Theis and Morgan JJ.
Mrs Justice McGowan said: “This is an occasion of celebration; following the path laid by those few women so many years ago we have moved increasingly towards greater equality in representation for women coming to the Bar and in being appointed silk. We have not yet reached parity, but we have made great progress, and I am delighted to mark this wonderful achievement.”
The celebration highlighted key landmark moments, including the appointments of Helena Normanton and Rose Heilbron as the first women KCs in 1949, and the achievements of the 639 women who have followed behind them since.
Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr spoke about women’s progress in the legal profession and the ongoing need for greater representation at senior levels. “You are all magnificent and an extraordinary inspiration to the profession and to young aspiring lawyers everywhere” she said to those in attendance.
Lucy Wyles KC, who is 2TG’s first woman Head of Chambers, was delighted to attend the event with her fellow Silks: “At 2TG we champion equality and celebrate those who are advocates for gender parity. We are proud to have six women silks, which means that almost 40% of our King’s Counsel are women. Over 40% of our members and staff are women.”
Today, at the practising Bar, women make up 39% of all barristers and 21% of KCs.
