Abram and others v UEFA [2025] EWHC 483 (KB): Liverpool Fans win right to sue in England

Posted: 07/03/2025

On 7 March 2025, Mr Justice Turner gave judgment in Abram and others v UEFA and UEFA Events [2025] EWHC 483 (KB), dismissing a jurisdiction challenge by UEFA in a group claim brought by Liverpool fans injured in the well-publicised events surrounding the 2022 Champions League Final at the Stade de France between Liverpool FC and Real Madrid.

Mr Justice Turner rejected UEFA’s jurisdiction challenge on all grounds, confirming the claimants’ right to have their claims heard in England. In doing so, he gave significant guidance as to the application of the foreign act of state doctrine and affirmed the proper approach to expert evidence and foreign law at the jurisdiction stage.

A copy of the judgment can be downloaded here.

Alistair Mackenzie, instructed by Leigh Day, appeared for the Claimants together with Matthew Chapman KC. Alistair is a leading junior in group litigation and jurisdictional disputes.
