Cost: Free
CPD: 1.5 hours

There is hardly a day when cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (‘BTC’), Ethereum (‘ETH’) and Ripple (‘XRP’) are not on the front page of the newspapers. This seminar provides an introduction to the technology behind these virtual currencies, such as ‘blockchain’ and ‘distributed ledgers’, highlights recent developments and controversies before focussing on the legal status and legal problems arising from the proliferation of these 21st century ‘coins’. Whilst international regulation of these currencies does not appear to be imminent, disputes involving cryptocurrencies are already coming before the Courts. What exactly are they? Are they a form of property? Are cryptocurrencies legal tender? Are they actually currency at all? Can you get a judgment in, for example, Bitcoin? What are the consequences for their use in contracts? What are the implications in the context of freezing injunctions and for the enforcement of judgments?

Christopher Lundie and George Hilton discuss these and other issues in a seminar which has already proved popular in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

No previous knowledge of FinTech required!

We would be delighted if you could join us. We will start promptly at 6pm. The seminar will last about 1 hour and will be followed by drinks and canapés.
